OTT 232: What are the Benefits of Learning When Using Makerspace in the Classroom?

Are you tired of the same old boring classroom activities? 

Well, it's time to break out the toolboxes and prepare for hands-on learning with makerspace! So gather your library staff, classroom teachers, and even your local community because it is time for maker space! From kindergarteners building simple machines to high schoolers designing robots, makerspace takes classrooms by storm across all grade levels. But don't worry if your classroom doesn't have a 3 D Printer or a laser cutter. Simple art equipment will do. Even better are recyclable materials like Legos and Play-Doh. Simple materials like popsicle sticks, cardboard, and pipe cleaners will also do the trick. No fancy equipment is necessary.

The importance of makerspaces in elementary education lies in preparing children for future careers and nurturing essential life skills. These creative hubs offer a safe environment for risk-taking without fear of failure. Students can learn by doing rather than solely relying on textbooks or lectures—a refreshing change indeed! I know what you are thinking. But how do I get all this up and running with all the other demands I have on my plate as a teacher? That's the good news. There are so many ideas for Makerspace, and I'll be sharing those in the coming weeks. 

One idea is to integrate literacy into the engineering design process. Take Thanksgiving, for example. We are getting to that time of year when we think about activities we can do with Thanksgiving books and literature. 

Makerspace is the perfect answer to a read-aloud extension. Try choosing books like A Turkey for Thanksgiving or Turkey Trouble. Do your regular read-aloud and then closely examine the problem in each story. Try a STEM/ Makerspace extension! Kids work through the engineering design process to solve the problems in the story. Now kids are really thinking! Plus, that gives you time to answer an email or two. (To actually work at work!)
